What is a Tesla Powerwall?

Tesla Powerwall 3 App

For those new to the world of Tesla Powerwall, these innovative battery systems are designed to store solar energy for backup purposes. Embracing solar energy not only grants homeowners more autonomy from the conventional power grid but also leads to reduced utility bills and a smaller carbon footprint.

The latest Powerwall model, Powerwall 3, stands out as the pinnacle of functionality. With the Tesla App, users can effortlessly monitor their energy storage and usage, seamlessly integrating it into their daily lives.

What’s New With the Tesla Powerwall 3?

Improved Power Output

The Tesla Powerwall 3 boasts several significant improvements over the Powerwall 2 and Powerwall +. The 11.5kW continuous power rating (on-grid) might be most notable–over two times higher than the 5kW Powerwall 2. The battery backup power rating is 11.5kW continuous compared to the Powerwall 2’s 7kW peak. This improved continuous output means that only one Powerwall 3 battery can support the power needs of most homes during a blackout.

Better Battery Efficiency

The Powerwall 2 operates as an AC-coupled battery system, lacking a solar inverter but capable of being charged from any AC source, including existing solar systems or microinverters. Conversely, both the Powerwall + and Powerwall 3 are DC-coupled hybrid systems equipped with an integrated solar inverter, directly charging the battery from connected solar panels. Hybrid systems offer superior efficiency, as both the battery and solar array operate on DC power, eliminating the need for DC to AC conversion during solar charging.

Active Cooling System of the Powerwall 3

In contrast to its predecessor, the Powerwall 2, which relied on a complex liquid thermal management system, the latest Powerwall employs a relatively straightforward active cooling system driven by fans. This new design incorporates a lower cold air intake, utilizing natural convection to aid in cooling the inverter. The process is straightforward: as the substantial aluminum housing (heat sink) heats up, warm air ascends, creating a natural airflow, while the built-in fan enhances this circulation based on temperature fluctuations. Notably, this method mirrors the cooling approach utilized in many solar inverters and all-in-one hybrid systems. However, Tesla has elevated this concept by integrating dual fans and a distinctive air duct system, which channels air along both the front and rear of the battery unit.

Some additional improvements include:

  • The battery can support up to 20kW DC of solar.
  • It is easier to install than the Powerwall + due to a weight reduction.

Powerwall 3 vs. Powerwall 2 and Powerall + - What Stayed the Same?

Three prominent aspects have remained consistent across the Powerwall +, Powerwall 2, and Powerwall 3: the energy capacity, round-trip efficiency, and warranty. Like the older models, the energy capacity of 13.5kWh has remained consistent, the round-trip efficiency remains around 90%, and the warranty holds firm at ten years.
